Victorian ESC, draft decision on T5 costs December 2008: The Essential Services Commission has released its draft decision on the purchase and OMR costs of T5s in Victoria. Councils can make submissions on the draft until 31 December 2008.
WA, SEREG councils perform innovative trial of new technologies December 2008: The City of Armadale has partnered with multiple stakeholder to trial the 42W CFL and 50W twin-arc high pressure sodium lamp. The City of Gosnells is trialling new generation LED lighting but expects further improvements in technology before they can meet standards.
Western Australia, Department of Defence is installing LEDs November 2008: The Garden Island base has installed the first 330 LED street lights of around 2200 in an attempt to conserve energy and maintenance requirements.
City of Melbourne, Active Reactor trial in the CBD November 2008: 70 Active Reactors have been installed with new luminaires along Collins Street. Results will be monitored and used to promote wider uptake of the technology.
City of Subiaco, Western Australia October 2008: The City has installed 927 of the 42W compact fluorescent lamps from 2002, replacing City-owned lighting, with results showing Standards compliance, better lighting levels, better colour, less stray light combined with lower glare, and better reliability.
City of Whittlesea, Victoria October 2008: Council has announced it will undertake the first non-trial installation of a new breed of energy-efficient street light fittings since their use was approved by electricity distributor SP Ausnet.
Victoria, Strategic State-Wide Business Case September 2008: This report, produced by a multi-stakeholder group, presents the business case for bulk change over of public lighting across Victoria. It considers the costs and benefits of a state wide replacement of 80 watt mercury vapour lamps with a more energy efficient option on minor roads. The project considered a range of factors relevant to the roll out of sustainable public lighting technology.
City of Whittlesea, Victoria September 2008: Solar powered road studs have been installed on a rural road in Yan Yean providing motorists with increased visibility and safety on unlit roads.
City of Adelaide, South Australia August 2008: Council has passed a Carbon-Neutral Council Action Plan in the last few days committing around $300,000 to sustainable public lighting.
Northern Territory Power and Water Corporation August 2008: Trials have taken place involving the replacement of 80 watt Mercury Vapour (MV) lighting with 2x14 T5 lights.
City of Wodonga, Victoria August 2008: conducts multiple trials and installations of sustainable public lighting. Several trials of sustainable street lighting are underway, including the use of T5s and CFLs as well as solar lighting and active reactors in HPS lights.
Ecolight nature park project by Valencia City Council, Spain July 2008: The project reduced energy consumption, light pollution and ultraviolet wavelength pollution by changing or removing lights and erecting vegetation screens. They also developed a municipal by-law providing a new framework for the management of public lighting, and published a book on the management of light in natural areas.
Energy Australia, NSW technically accepts the 42W CFL and T5 linear fluorescent 26 May 2008: The 42W CFL is the NSW distribution business's preferred energy efficient replacement lamp with a proviso that Councils can choose the T5 fluorescent as an alternative.
South Australian Sustainable Public Lighting Project update 26 May 2008: Recruitment for project officer and talks with ETSA Utilities underway, and public lighting in a Sector Agreement with the State government to be announced shortly.
Nillumbik Shire Council, Victoria receives grant to upgrade streetlights April 2008: Sustainability Fund Grant of over $500,000 to help Nillumbik Shire Council, Darebin City Council and Wodonga City Council upgrade 3,680 lights to the Pierlite 14W Greenstreet.
Victorian councils and distributors prepare for bulk changeovers April 2008: Several opting for T5 linear fluorescents in 2008 or 2009, with financial analysis, time trials by Alinta, and a procurement working group established.
Compact fluorescent tested for salty conditions March 2008: Surf Coast Shire Council together with Powercor are testing the 42W compact fluorescent for performance in salty conditions, with community survey results available.
VSPLAG Technical Committee approves T5 March 2008: The VSPLAG technical committee, which includes representatives of each of the Victorian distribution businesses, has approved the Pierlite T5 2x14W and 2x24W light fittings for use as standard fittings in Victoria.

Accelerated Action Grant Funds South Australian Regional Public Lighting Asset Audit 25 February 2008: Six CCP councils in South Australia βthe Cities of Campbelltown, Mitcham, Norwood Payneham & St Peters, Prospect, Port Adelaide Enfield and Tea Tree Gully β are undertaking a regional audit of their public lighting assets.
Lake Macquarie First To Trial LED Floodlight 17 January 2008: Lake Macquarie City Council in New South Wales has installed an LED floodlight, making it the first council in Australia to trial the new technology.
Adelaide trials Dynamic Control Technologies 2007/8: Adelaide City Council retrofitting dynamic control technologies into two existing lighting installations: SE Park Lands Walk β pedestrian pathway lighting (using step adjustment and sensors), and North Terrace Boulevard β street and pedestrian lighting (using dynamic and automatic step adjustment).
Pilot Project: LED Technologies for Main Road Applications, Canada 5 December 2007: Welland, Ontario has become the first city in Canada and North America to install LED lights in a roadway (i.e. main road) application.
Street Lighting Research Program, Toronto, Canada 4 December 2007: Toronto Hydro Energy Services Street Lighting has launched the first phase of ALAMP, a year-long research project aimed at reviewing new street lighting technologies.
South Australian Sustainable Public Lighting Project Receives $60,000 3 December 2007: The Local Government Association of South Australia (LGASA) has received $60,000 under the Local Government Research and Development Scheme for a state-based project to help all councils in South Australia provide more sustainable public lighting services.
New Zealand Efficient Lighting proposals - deadline extended 16 November 2007: As part of its Efficient Lighting programme, the Electricity Commission of New Zealand is inviting proposals for national or regional projects to eliminate inefficient street lighting. Proposals are now due by 5pm Friday 23 November 2007.
Ann Arbor to convert all downtown street lights to LED 17 October 2007: Mayor John Hieftje of Ann Arbor, Michigan has announced that the city will be the first in the United States to install energy efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in all of its downtown street lights.
South Australian council trials four efficient lights Sept 2007: Salisbury City Council is conducting a 2.5 year trial involving 32W compact fluorescent, 35W metal halide, 70 metal halide and 70 watt high pressure sodium.
Major trials announced in SE Queensland 24 September 2007: Gold Coast City Council and Maroochy City Council are the first two of five councils to join with Energex and the State Government in testing the most effective energy-efficient streetlights as part of a $600,000 research program. European streetlighting report 6 September 2007: The preparatory study for the European Commission provides information on whether and which eco-design requirements could be set for street lighting products under the framework of Directive 2005/32/EC on eco-design requirements for energy-using products. This report specifically recommends the banning of high pressure mercury lights from Europe by 2010.
Derby, UK replaces lighting using a Private Finance Initiative contract Aug 2007: Balfour Beatty Power Networks to improve Derby City Council's street lighting as part of a multi-million pound contract until 2032.
Australian inventor designs LED streetlight 11 July 2007: Australian inventor Keith Higgins has developed a highly energy efficient streetlight based on LED technology.
Lunar Resonant Street Lamp 6 July 2007: Civil Twilight have won the fourth annual Next Generation design competition with their innovative alternative to conventional streetlighting.
ICLEI Oceania's response to the VEET Issues Paper 22 May 2007: ICLEI Oceania's submission in response to the State Government of Victoria's Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET) Scheme Issues Paper contains a section on public lighting.
Banyule, Vic consults community on dimming installation 2006: Following consultation with local residents, Banyule City Council in Victoria installed timers on park lights to reduce light pollution and discouraging use of the park late at night.
