About the ICLEI Africa Secretariat (ICLEI-AS)

Regional Office based in Cape Town, South Africa
The ICLEI Africa Secretariat Regional Office is currently hosted by the City of Cape Town (since March 2008), which was successful in securing a bid to host the Secretariat for a period of five years. ICLEI’s host cities provide generous support in the form of grants, staff secondments, office space, and other in-kind support. The Secretariat’s offices are located in the City’s Environmental Resource Management Department building in central Cape Town. With continued growth and increased involvement in new programmes, the ICLEI-AS strives to forge new partnerships and increase member numbers on the African continent. Water Office based in Tshwane, South Africa
The ICLEI-AS Water Office is currently hosted by the City of Tshwane (Pretoria) in the Water and Sanitation Department. The office implements projects as part of the ICLEI Water Campaign. The campaign assists local governments to quantify and qualify water resource use, develop local water action plans, set targets, act on their plans, and track and report goal-achievement. Past projects include LoGo Water (2005 – 2007) and Capacity Building for Integrated Governance in the Management of Water and Sanitation (2005 – 2008). Water Office contact details »

The ICLEI Africa Secretariat is the ‘hub’ of the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project, based in Cape Town, South Africa. LAB is a global urban biodiversity pilot project running from 2006 to 2009 and working with a select group of local and regional authorities from around the world. Its overarching aim is to improve biodiversity management at the level of local government. The project forms the first step in the broader ICLEI Biodiversity Initiative. Local Biodiversity Management workshops in South Africa

Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) is implementing workshops in 3 South African provinces, Western Cape, Gauteng and Mpumalanga, which aim to build local government capacity and raise biodiversity awareness. 2010, being the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB), presents an unprecedented opportunity for local governments across the world to take local action for biodiversity and these workshops will aid local governments to derive maximum benefit from the IYB. The Local Biodiversity Management workshops are being implemented by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability - for the national South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), with financial support from DEA, as well as the Kingdom of Norway (Norad).
The dates for the workshops are:
Western Cape: 24-26 February
Gauteng: 3-5 March
Mpumalanga: 8-10 March

SA to host Basic meeting in April 2010

The Basic-group of countries – Brazil, SA, India and China – attended a meeting in Delhi, during the weekend of 22 January to establish the way forward on working together toward the next stages of the international climate change process. The Basic group meetings come after the production of the ‘Copenhagen Accord’, a non-binding deal stemming from the UNFCCC COP15 which took place in Copenhagen in December 2009. More »

New Mitigation Tool for Local Governments

ICLEI Africa, in partnership with various role-players, have completed developing, and are in the process of distributing, a new climate mitigation tool aimed at local governments. The mitigation tool, Sustainable Urban Energy Planning: A Handbook for Cities and Towns in Developing Countries, has been developed in cooperation with UN-HABITAT and UNEP and gives a comprehensive overview of Sustainable Urban Energy planning and implementation in developing countries at the local government level. ICLEI Africa, in partnership with various role-players, have completed developing, and are in the process of distributing, a new climate mitigation tool aimed at local governments. The mitigation tool, Sustainable Urban Energy Planning: A Handbook for Cities and Towns in Developing Countries, has been developed in cooperation with UN-HABITAT and UNEP and gives a comprehensive overview of Sustainable Urban Energy planning and implementation in developing countries at the local government level. Conference of the Parties 15 in Copenhagen
2009/12/22
The 18th of December marked the end of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties 15 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This historic event was attended by over 100 heads of state and national representatives. ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability - facilitated a delegation of more than 1100 local government representatives from across the globe through the Local Government Climate Roadmap process. ICLEI was also host to the Local Government Climate Lounge, which was situated in the heart of the Bella Centre, where the climate talks were being held.
