ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of 12 mega-cities, 100 super-cities and urban regions, 450 large cities as well as 450 small and medium-sized cities and towns in 84 countries.
The Global Executive Committee consists of 1 appointed representative from each Regional Executive Committee and Portfolio Members who serve at the global level under specific themes and are elected by the Council.
The ICLEI Africa Secretariat facilitates ICLEI memberships in Sub-Saharan Africa, with it's Head Office in Cape Town, South Africa. The Secretariat's Water Office is located in Tshwane, South Africa.
Local government organisations in Sub-Saharan African countries are encouraged to join the growing ICLEI membership total of 68 Members, with a significant growth in numbers envisaged for 2012. ICLEI is a democratic organization with each local government Member holding a position on the Council. The Members of the Council establish the priorities and direction for ICLEI through the adoption of the Strategic Plan. Members also elect 21 representatives to serve on the ICLEI Executive Committee, which oversees the implementation of the Strategic Plan and ICLEI operations.
ICLEI offers local governments and their national and regional associations Full Membership in the ICLEI Council with powers to govern the organization internationally. Membership rates are based upon the population of the local authority and its national per capita income. The payment of dues is made on an annual basis.
ICLEI also offers non-voting Associate Member status to state and national government agencies, non-profit and non-governmental organizations, and individuals who wish to be involved in the organization's ongoing efforts.
Full Membership in ICLEI is offered to local governments and associations of local governments. Full Members of the Council have the power to elect the ICLEI Executive Committee, revise the ICLEI Charter, and establish policy direction for the organization. Other benefits of Full Mmembership include participation in ICLEI campaigns and projects, and reduced prices on ICLEI publications. Membership rates are based upon the population of the local government and its gross national income. The payment of dues is made on an annual basis
ICLEI offers Associate Memberships to State and National Governments and their departments, non-profit and non-governmental organizations, and individuals. Associate Membership Associate Membership benefits includes a variety of including access to all of ICLEI's publications and special invitations and rates for ICLEI events and programs. Associate Members do not have power to elect the ICLEI Executive Committee, revise the ICLEI Charter, or establish policy direction for the organization. Associate Members yearly dues rates are based upon type of organization and gross national income per capita.
