COUNCIL INITIATIVE OF THE MONTHBega Valley Shire Council: Council/Community Partnerships“Life Saving Energy” initiativeBackgroundCEFE (Clean Energy for Eternity) is a not-for-profit association whose membership comprises citizens from communities on the far south coast of New South Wales. CEFE is composed of a wide cross-section of the public who are becoming increasingly concerned about climate change. The group arose after Dr Matthew Nott, an orthopedic surgeon based in the Bega Valley Shire, invited the community to join him in making a human sign on climate change. On 21 May 2006, over 3,000 people wrote the words ‘Clean Energy for Eternity’ and ‘Imagine’ along Tathra Beach. CEFE meetings have been chaired by the Mayor of Bega Valley Shire, Tony Allen, who also delivered a speech at the opening of the Tathra club renewable power system. The partnership has enabled CEFE the use of Council resources such as meeting rooms and printing, including funding the production of bumper stickers. AimBega Shire has a strong commitment to working with the community to develop policy, provide leadership and support local programs. The shire commitment to addressing climate change is demonstrated by its support for the CEFE 50/50 by 20/20 target, which aims to reduce energy use by 50%, and increase use of renewable power generation by 50%, by 2020.
