Climate Change: What's in it for us?

Thursday 1 November 2007

ICLEI breakfast briefing event held at the Municipal Association of Victoria Annual Conference.

Climate change is high on the agenda of all spheres of government as we grapple with the challenge of reducing our greenhouse emissions and addressing the impacts of climate change on our communities.

Local councils in Victoria have been active over the past 10 years working with ICLEI Oceania. ICLEI Oceania currently works with 68 local councils participating in the Cities for Climate Protection Program and 34 councils participating in the Water Campaign™.

The Briefing Breakfast provided delegates an opportunity to hear representatives from the State Government of Victoria, the Municipal Association of Victoria, ICLEI Oceania and the Australasian Mayors Council for Climate Protection on responses to climate change.

Local government tackling climate change

Friday 19 October 2007

ICLEI Oceania held a Briefing Breakfast at the Adelaide Convention Centre as part of the Local Government Association of South Australia's AGM.

South Australians need to collaborate if climate change strategies are to be effective, a notion thread throughout speeches from ICLEI, the LGASA, Minister Gail Gago and the Australasian Mayors Council for Climate Protection (AMCCP). View images.

The achievements of South Australasian councils are leading edge, yet like local and state initiatives across the country there is much more that needs to be done.

Ivan Brooks, Mayor of Mitcham and representative of the AMCCP Coordination Committee briefed the audience on the role of the AMCCP and focused on sustainable public lighting – a real opportunity to cut emissions and energy costs within communities.

A panel forum followed the speakers and allowed the audience of mostly mayors to engage in discussion on water and energy policies and community approaches. The AMCCP will play a major role in events like this across Australia and New Zealand.

All mayors representing council participants of CCP programs are encouraged to propose issues and initiatives for the AMCCP to consider.
