Former San Fernando La Union Mayor Mary Jane Ortega elected as ICLEI Vice President
ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat is proud to announce that Mary Jane Ortega was elected as one of three ICLEI Vice Presidents during the Global Executive Committee (GexCom) meeting held in Seoul, Korea last October 18, 2012.
The Global Executive Committee elected its future leadership for the 2012-2015 term during this meeting. Incumbent ICLEI President David Cadman was unanimously re-elected for a third term. Mexico City’s Minister of Environment Martha Delgado Peralta was re-elected as First Vice President, while eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban) Mayor James Nxumalo and CityNet Secretary General Mary Jane Ortega were elected as Vice Presidents.
As Vice President, Mary Jane Ortega will support President Cadman in representing ICLEI and its work globally.
Mary Jane Ortega served as the Mayor of San Fernando, La Union Philippines for three terms (1998-2007) and has received numerous awards during her period in office. Concurrently, she is also serving as a member of the Regional Executive Committee for ICLEI Southeast Asia and representative to the GexCom. She currently holds the thematic portfolio for ADB. Mary Jane Ortega is also a member of the World Mayor’s Council on Climate Change, and currently Secretary General of CityNet, an international organization of more than 100 member cities and local governments committed to helping local governments improve the sustainability of human settlements.

ICLEI World Congress 2012, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 14 - 18 June 2012
Held every 3 years, the world congress gathers local government and world leaders to take up the charge to sustainability. The event will take place just days before the Rio+20 Conference in neighboring Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marking two decades since the adoption of Agenda 21.

Global Climate Community releases city-scale emissions accounting standard for public comment

ICLEI’s Local Action Counter records cities working towards sustainability

With one year to go to Rio+20 ICLEI has launched an online counter, where individuals can declare their city is working for sustainable development. This global initiative seeks to publicize the vast number of cities already taking action, to show world leaders that cities are key to getting our planet back on track and building a just, sustainable and secure future for all.
ICLEI aims to mobilize citizens across the world to promote and recognize their city’s work by simply entering their details in the counter. When populated, the counter will be one way of reflecting the progress of the Local Agenda 21 movement and provide an inspiring reminder that each small step taken at the local level adds up to something extraordinary globally.
The UN Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20, will take place from 4 – 6 June 2012 and marks the 20th anniversary of the UN Earth Summit, a milestone in the global sustainability process and the birthplace of the Local Agenda 21 movement. With the Local Agenda 21 movement now almost 20 years old, the event will evaluate what local sustainability has achieved.

BONN/GERMANY - Over the next 40 years we will have to build the same urban capacity again that was built over the last 4000 years. On top of this, 80 percent of the expected US$80-100 billion per year in climate change adaptation costs are to be borne by urban areas. Now is the time to make sure that the cities of the future will be resource-efficient and resilient.
To provide a global platform for cities on resilience and adaptation to climate change, ICLEI, together with the City of Bonn and the World Mayors Council on Climate Change, is staging the Resilient Cities 2011 world congress in Bonn, Germany, on 3-5 June. The patron of the congress is UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director Joan Clos, who points out that “preparing for the impacts of climate change on the world’s cities is a major challenge of the 21st century”. Local governments underline their role in sustainable development at UNCSD19

At this 19th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, member states were not able to reach consensus, so no decision could be adopted. One of the most anticipated outcomes of the session had been the adoption of the 10-year Framework of Programs for Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP for SCP), a framework seeking to support countries, cities and other actors to move towards sustainable consumption and production. The Local Authority Major Group has made its priorities clear in its Opening Statement delivered Monday 2 May. Speaking on behalf of the local authorities, ICLEI stressed the role of cities in implementing CSD's themes such as sustainable transport and waste management, while also highlighting the purchasing power of cities in executing sustainable procurement programs. This is the final CSD session before the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as “Rio+20”, to be held in Rio de Janeiro on 4-6 June 2012. All eyes are now turned to the preparatory process towards Rio+20, where ICLEI will again take on its task as the local authority major group organizing partner. ICLEI has produced a Briefing Sheet to provide further information on the Rio+20 issues and processes. -- About UN CSD and ICLEI The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) was established by the UN General Assembly in December 1992 to ensure effective follow-up of United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Rio Earth Summit. The Partnership for Urban Risk Reduction (PURR), an ad-hoc coalition composed of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative (EMI), Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), Metropolis and CITYNET, has been set up to develop a risk reduction policy. Among its first action, the PURR is launching a project “Local Action for Disaster Risk Reduction” that raise awareness, build competency and support local action for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
