News & Outcomes

“The city of Kyoto (should) be celebrated

around the world as the city that saved the world
from climate change.”
Mr. David Cadman

Councillor, Vancouver (Canada)
ICLEI President

From 16 to 18 February 2007, the city of Kyoto generously hosted the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change. Co-organized by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.

ICLEI would like to convey its appreciation to the generous host of the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change, His Honour Yorikane Masumoto, and the city of Kyoto.

In attendance at the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change were 108 local governments and associations from Africa, East Asia, Europe, North America, the Oceania Region, South Asia and Southeast Asia.

The purpose of the Conference was to:
  • exchange experiences and explore climate change solutions relevant in particular to Asia Pacific local governments – on effective energy use, clean and renewable energy, sustainable transport, waste management systems, and partnership with local stakeholders.
  • introduce local government leaders to adaptation projects enabling local governments to protect themselves from the impacts of climate change;
  • explore opportunities for local governments in the Kyoto Mechanisms and other support systems, and to strengthen international cooperation at local government level in the Asia Pacific Region; and
  • enable local government leaders to be engaged in the international climate change negotiations (as ICLEI has official status at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).

The Second Assembly of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC) was held concurrently with the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change. Members of the WMCCC met to receive a high-level briefing on the status of international climate change negotiations, explore future opportunities for the WMCCC to have a global impact, and to discuss Council business and establish a workplan for the coming year.

World Mayors Council on Climate Change
The Second Assembly of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change was held concurrently with the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change.

The World Mayors Council on Climate Change is an alliance of committed local government leaders whose concerns about the effects of global climate change have prompted them to foster international cooperation and call for climate mitigation and adaptation as well as sustainability policies.

They do so not simply on account of the impacts on their own cities and the need to provide for the future, but because they believe that the world’s cities have a special obligation to help make global strategies work. World Mayors Council members combine their experience and knowledge in cooperating with each other and with other partners. They provide their expertise and influence to advance the global debate and the climate change strategy and related sustainability issues.

Members of the WMCCC met to receive a high-level briefing on the status of international climate change negotiations, explore future opportunities for the WMCCC to have a global impact, and to discuss Council business and establish a workplan for the coming year.

Of the 19 current members of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change, nine were able to attend the Second Assembly in Kyoto City.
