Purpose

The focus of the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change will be to:

  • exchange experiences and explore climate change solutions relevant in particular to Asia Pacific local governments – on effective energy use, clean and renewable energy, sustainable transport, waste management systems, and partnership with local stakeholders.
  • introduce local government leaders to adaptation projects enabling local governments to protect themselves from the impacts of climate change;
  • explore opportunities for local governments in the Kyoto Mechanisms and other support systems, and to strengthen international cooperation at local government level in the Asia Pacific Region; and
  • enable local government leaders to be engaged in the international climate change negotiations (as ICLEI has official status at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).

The Second Assembly of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC) will be held concurrently with the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change.

The WMCCC, established in 2005 to politically promote climate protection policies at the local level, is open to all local government leaders to join. For more information on becoming a Member of the WMCCC, please visit www.iclei.org/worldmayorscouncil.
