ICLEI-A/NZ Water Campaign™ Greater Melbourne Region Recognition Event

ICLEI-A/NZ in conjunction with its partners City West Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water, the Victorian Government and the Australian Government, hosted a Victorian Recognition Event on Friday September 8 2006 on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne. This  event celebrated the achievements of Victorian local governments in the Water Campaign™ and CCP programs and launched a number of key documents.

The Greater Melbourne region Water Campaign™ component of this event launched a new 3 year agreement between City West Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water and ICLEI-A/NZ.  The event also recognised the achievements participating local governments have made in improving water management.

The event was formally opened by Melbourne Lord Mayor John So who welcomed the audience. The event was attended by representatives from over 50 Victorian local governments, as well as state and Australian government representatives.

The keynote speaker for the event was the Hon. John Thwaites, Deputy Premier and Minister for the Environment and Water. Minister Thwaites commended Victorian local government for the role it is playing in addressing water conservation and climate change.

Dennis Cavagna, Managing Director, South East Water

 

 

 

Dennis Cavagna, Managing Director, South East Water, spoke on behalf of Melbourne's water businesses City West Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water.  In his speech Mr Cavagna launched a new 3 year agreement between the water businesses and ICLEI-A/NZ to continue to deliver the Water Campaign™ in the Greater Melbourne region.  This agreement provides for a joint approach to support councils in water management and assist the water businesses to meet their water conservation targets.  Mr Cavagna praised the commitment of participating local governments to sustainable water management, which is demonstrated via council progress in the Water Campaign™.

Water Campaign™ Milestones

Minister Thwaites, Wayne Wescott – ICLEI-A/NZ Chief Executive Officer and three representatives of the Melbourne water businesses, Anne Barker, Managing Director - City West Water, Dennis Cavagna, Managing Director - South East Water,  and Pat McCafferty, Acting Chief Executive Officer - Yarra Valley Water, awarded eight councils in the Greater Melbourne region for completing Milestones in the Water Campaign™.
