About CCPDecember 2009Cities for Climate Protection – AustraliaCCP Australia was established in 1997 when twenty-nine councils piloted the program and provided the local government sector access to program, technical and political support for local greenhouse action. Federal Government funding enabled the program to be rolled out across metropolitan, regional and rural Australia to become the largest local government greenhouse action program in the world. Communities for Climate Protection – New ZealandIn 2004 the CCP New Zealand program was established with funding from the New Zealand Government. In 2009 when funding ceased there were 34 district, city and regional councils participating in the program with an office hosted by the City of Wellington. Today the legacy of the work undertaken by Australian and New Zealand councils is available and forms the basis for building CCP Australia and New Zealand Generation 2. CCP PartnersICLEI Oceania's climate change work continues through CCP Partners, with a focus on high-level political and management support. More than 60 councils from Australia and New Zealand have shown their support for local climate action by joining CCP Partners. ICLEI Oceania will work with these councils to support them in their ongoing mitigation work, while developing the 'next generation' CCP program, building on the outcomes of the international climate talks. CCP Partners is designed to ensure that past lessons and actions are built upon, and that the local government sector is positioned to respond to the opportunities and issues that will arise out of legislative and regulatory responses to the impacts of climate change. As world leaders prepare to meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a post-Kyoto global climate agreement, cities and local governments are pressing hard to be included in the agreement’s text. ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is coordinating the world-wide effort to ensure the work and experiences of cities and local governments are recognised in the new UN climate agreement.
