About CCP-NZ

Communities for Climate Protection - New Zealand (CCP-NZ) is a voluntary programme which aims to empower local government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from councils' operations and from their communities through a strategic milestones framework designed for both territorial authorities and regional councils.

CCP-NZ is a New Zealand Government initiative delivered by ICLEI Oceania as part of ICLEI's international Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) campaign.

With hundreds of councils worldwide having participated in the CCP campaign for up to 15 years, New Zealand councils can access all of the worldwide experience of local government climate change through the international programme that has been customised for New Zealand.

CCP-NZ assists councils to identify actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as:

  • saving energy and promoting renewable energy
  • increasing sustainable transport
  • enhancing urban design
  • reducing emissions from landfills
  • supporting adoption of low-carbon technology

Local Government and Climate Protection

People, by their actions, are changing the climate.  Increased climate variations and climatic extremes will cause widespread economic, social and environmental dislocation. Climate change will have a major impact on the work of councils and the well-being of their communities.

"Think Global, Act Local" is a motto that is well-suited to climate change action: Climate change is a global issue that requires local, as well as national and international, responses.

Central governments play an essential role through funding, lobbying, policy and legislation.

Local government also has a critical role in creating and sustaining local solutions which add to the cumulative efforts around the globe, leading to effective reductions of greenhouse gas emissions. The international CCP campaign has hundreds of councils participating and New Zealand councils are joining the wave of action.

As well as joining the internatonal action, many councils in New Zealand have already experienced weather-related events that experts predict will become more common as climate change continues. From storms to local flooding, councils have demonstrated that they are vitally important in responding to such crises, as they are also crucial in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Councils can reduce the emissions they produce from their own activities. Their planning powers, spending policies and community and business links can influence households and businesses and reduce emissions from waste disposal, land use change, energy use and transport.

CCP-NZ can assist councils to undertake this crucial work.
