World Congress news from Oceania delegates

ICLEI World Congress 2006, 27 February - 3 March

Cape Town, South Africa

ICLEI's World Congress is an international gathering of local government leaders dedicated to building sustainable communities and cities.

Representatives from 12 councils across Australia and New Zealand joined ICLEI staff from Melbourne and Wellington to attend the Congress in Cape Town.

Mayor Nick Berman, Hornsby Shire Council and Cr Fraser Brindley, Melbourne City Council attended as newly elected members of the ICLEI Executive Committee along with Wayne Wescott, CEO, Robyn Leeson, Director, Centre for Public Sector Sustainability Reporting, Maria Simonelli, Executive Manager and Nathan Ross, Programme Co-ordinator, Communities for Climate Protection - New Zealand.

Cape Town proved an important setting for ICLEI's World Congress with its two World Heritage sites: Robben Island (famous for being the prison of Nelson Mandela and his colleagues) and looming Table Mountain (a truly spiritual "Guardian of Africa"). This helped Congress delegates to connect the small-scale work happening in cities around the world with the global impact that collective local actions have on us all.
