New CCP councils and changes to Qld participants

ICLEI Oceania welcomes Shoalhaven City Council and Upper Lachlan Shire Council, New South Wales, to the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia Program.

The new CCP participants become part of an international network of more than 800 local governments around the world dedicated to making environmental improvements at the local level.

With the recent amalgamations of Queensland local government, which reduced the number of CCP councils in Queensland from 26 to 19, there are now 230 CCP Australia participants, representing 84% of the population.

The affected Queensland councils are detailed below (existing CCP participants in bold):

  • Beaudesert Shire Council has amalgamated with Boonah Shire Council to form Scenic Rim Regional Council.
  • Cairns City Council and Douglas Shire Council have amalgamated to form Cairns Regional Council
  • City of Hervey Bay has amalgamated with Maryborough City Council, Tiaro Shire Council and Woocoo Shire Council to form Fraser Coast Regional Council
  • Calliope Shire Council, Gladstone City Council and Miriam Vale Shire Council have amalgamated to form Gladstone Regional Council
  • City of Mackay has amalgamated with Mirani Shire Council and Sarina Shire Council to form Mackay Regional Council
  • Caboolture Shire Council and Pine Rivers Shire Council have amalgamated with Redcliffe City Council to form Moreton Bay Regional Council
  • City of Rockhampton has amalgamated with Fitzroy Shire Council, Livingstone Shire Council and Mount Morgan Shire Council to form Rockhampton Regional Council
  • Caloundra City Council, Maroochy Shire Council and Noosa Shire Council now form Sunshine Coast Regional Council
  • Mareeba Shire Council has amalgamated with Atherton Shire Council, Eacham Shire Council and Herberton Shire Council to form Tablelands Regional Council
  • Toowoomba City Council has amalgamated with Cambooya Shire Council, Clifton Shire Council, Crowns Nest Shire Council, Jondaryan Shire Council, Millmerran Shire Council, Pittsworth Shire Council and Rosalie Shire Council to form Toowoomba Regional Council
  • Thuringowa City Council and Townsville City Council now form Townsville City Council
  • Bowen Shire Council has amalgamated with Whitsunday Shire Council to form Whitsunday Regional Council

Gold Coast City Council, Ipswich City Council and Logan City Council have had some changes to their borders but all remain in the program. The final four Queensland CCP participants, Brisbane City Council, Burdekin Shire Council, Shire of Murweh and Redland City Council, were unaffected by the amalgamations.
