Call for interest – World Congress and Study Tour 2009

ICLEI Oceania is planning a delegation of council representatives to attend the June 2009 ICLEI World Congress in Edmonton, Canada, and take part in a North American study tour.

We invite elected members, chief executives and senior managers from ICLEI member councils or campaign participants in Australia and New Zealand to express their interest.

ICLEI World Congress: Edmonton, Canada, 14–18 June 2009

The ICLEI Oceania 2009 World Congress delegation will be an opportunity to take part in ICLEI’s key international event, a gathering of ICLEI members, ICLEI’s strategic partners, and experts.

Held every three years, ICLEI’s World Congress offers an opportunity to learn about the achievements of the most advanced cities and towns, and to build upon past successes to advance local action for sustainability.

The 2009 Congress is to be hosted by Edmonton, Canada, a dynamic and diverse city that promises networking with experienced leaders in your fields of interest.

Additional North American Study Tour: 19–23 June 2009

We also offer an additional and optional study tour visiting a number of North American councils driving sustainable development. You will be immersed in real-life examples that could assist you to achieve your own corporate and community environmental objectives at home.

The tour is currently under development and it is anticipated that it will visit three West Coast USA cities known for their advanced sustainability practices and similarities to Australian council demographics.

As with all ICLEI Oceania events, both the World Congress and study tour will be an interactive and highly facilitated experience with multiple opportunities for networking and exploring best practice examples.

The tour may include onsite visits, briefings from fellow councillors and chief executives, networking dinners with international experts and a dedicated website for more information and pre-tour resources.

We intend to highlight exceptional and transferable examples of sustainable and liveable cities, visiting a number of diverse council locations, providing examples of how local governments are approaching their challenges to sustainability in the areas of waste, energy, green buildings, transport and urban planning and renewal.
