The public awareness program was part of the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign held at the Civic Center in Jabalpur, April 5, 2003. It was a joint venture undertaken by the Municipal Corporation Jabalpur (MCJ) and ICLEI, the main objective of which was to promote energy conservation among the general public and to display modern technology that may help in so doing. Six companies displayed their latest technology in this regard: Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board, MP Energy Development Corporation, Asian Electronics, Crompton, Shreyans and Tata IBP; and more than 400 Jabalpur residents visited during this one day event.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Vishwanath Dubey said that energy conservation is essential to the existence of mankind. Calling upon the youth, he said they should pledge to acquire such knowledge so that they may impart training to the youth of other cities and let the fruits of their initiatives be shared between communities in a way that allows local action to move the world.

He further suggested that worldwide efforts are now being focused on energy conservation and many financial institutions are recognizing these efforts by providing financial aids to the active partners. Expressing his opinion, he said that he wanted the City of Jabalpur to lead the way in this regard and that this can only be achieved with support at the grassroots level. The Mayor added that serious conservation efforts are already underway in the city. Calling upon the masses, he said that every institution, person, and the whole of society should unite and come forward to save energy. He also directed the Municipal Commissioner, Mr. Rajiv Dubey to make arrangements to install solar energy.

Mr. Vinay Saxena, Public Works Department of MCJ, said that for the last two years the Municipal Corporation has been involved with many activities in a joint effort with ICLEI to improve energy efficiency and conservation.
