Traffic Junction Design- Hyderabad
The CCP carbon emissions inventory suggests Hyderabad City faces, high levels of GHG emissions from transportation sector. This is attributed to high motor vehicle ownership, sprawling land use patterns, limited public transit services and Inadequate Transportation network and infrastructure have been major factors in increasing vehicle miles traveled (VMT). The emission levels are also directly related to congestion and delays.

After due deliberations and discussion with Hyderabad Municipal Corporation it was decided to undertake Transportation Project for preparation of the Action Plans to ease the traffic conditions. During the ICLEI’s preliminary studies it was found that the Green Lands Junction and Rajiv Gandhi Junction are the most Important, busiest and problematic junctions on the inner ring road corridor, which need immediate attention to achieve smooth traffic conditions along Begumpet corridor i.e., from St. Ann’s high school (Secunderabad) to Panjagutta in Hyderabad city. The present study as a pilot project is a pioneering attempt in the direction of developing Traffic Management Actions and emission analysis of Traffic problems at Green lands and Rajiv chowk intersections of Hyderabad city.

The main objective of this project is to look into innovative and cost effective solutions to decongest vehicular traffic at the selected Intersections and to get continuous smooth flow of traffic on the Secunderabad – Panjagutta (Via Greenlands) corridor, and also to develop solutions to environmental and urban management problems that mitigate the emissions of Green House Gases (GHG’s)

Exclusive field studies are carried out for two days simultaneously at both the intersections to collect data required for the study. Exhaustive 16-hour surveys are conducted to collect classified traffic volumes, and vehicular delays and queue lengths. Required statistics are also collected from reliable sources. To establish more comprehensive database, surveys such as intersection and corridor inventories are conducted.

Number of options were examined to decongest the intersections as well as the corridor, to assess and optimize pollution loads at the two intersections and Action Plans are prepared. The best alternative Action plan suitable to ease traffic conditions arrived from the proposed study of the two locations is presented to MCH and is suggested for implementation.
