Kolkata - City of the Past, Creating Landmarks for Present and Future
Calcuttta (Kolkata) Municipal Corporation (CMC) dates from 1726, but the first official delineation of Calcutta's boundaries took place in 1794. Since then the boundaries have changed many times. In 1951, the southern part of Tollygunge was added. In 1984, the South Suburban Municipality was merged with the CMC, increasing the total area under the Corporation from 104 to 187 square kilometers.
Present Environmental Scenario
Present Environmental Scenario
- Ambient Air Quality measurements do not show much deterioration (RPM levels have reduced substantially), but the geographic growth of the city and doubling of registered vehicles indicate that air pollution is now dispersed over a larger area.
- Water quality in the Hoogly River and at ghats, lakes, and other water bodies where the public has contact with water has deteriorated.
- Severe land development pressure on wetlands east of the metropolitan area.
- Noise level unacceptably high in sensitive areas.
- Land quality continues to be compromised by unsanitary solid waste disposal methods, including the disposal of biomedical and other hazardous waste.
