Udaipur - City of Lakes
Udaipur acquired its name from its founder and king, Maharana Udai Singh, and was established in approximately 1559. Udaipur is located in the State of Rajasthan, and is surrounded by the Aravalli hills and five lakes - Pichola, Fatehsagar, Rangsagar, Swaroopsagar and Dudh Talai. Udaipur is a major tourist destination with an expanding industrial and commercial base. It possesses inter-regional and intra-regional trade and commercial linkages, while retaining both historical and cultural prominence in Rajasthan.

The city's natural beauty attracts 800,000 tourists per year to a town with a population of 389,317 (2001 census). Over 100,000 of these visitors are international tourists that come to experience the placid beauty of the lakes, including the palace in the center of Lake Pichola. Udaipur is also the centre for performing arts, crafts, and its famed miniature paintings, as well as being the host of the popular Shilp Gram Festival.
