Gwalior is situated in the north part of the State of Madhya Pradesh and its relative proximity to Delhi has made it a "COUNTER MAGNET" to the national capital region. The city consists of 3 distinct urban townships: old Gwalior in the north, Lashkar in the south west, and Morar in the east. Gwalior is the fourth largest city in Madhya Pradesh. Gwalior Municipal Corporation (GMC) serves a population of approximately 1 million citizens in an area about 166 square kilometers, and registered a population growth rate of 19.71% during the 1990s. It is estimated that the population of the city will grow to 1,284,000 by 2021. GMC is making great efforts to improve its civic services and turn itself into a "clean and green "city.
