Recycling and waste disposal procedures in Ansan

May 03, 2007

Ansan (Korea) has disposal procedures for three waste streams for residents – these are general trash disposal, food trash disposal, and recyclable materials.

For general trash disposal, trash is to be placed in special trash bags that are available for purchase in supermarkets and grocery stores. For food waste disposal, residents of multi-family housing units must dispose of food in special containers within their complex. For single-family houses, special disposal bags are to be dropped off at designated places.

Recycled trash – which includes paper, cans and bottles, clothing, styrofoam and appliances – is disposed of in designated places. Other recyclables include batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and certain snack and ramen noodle packaging.

Waste management approaches also reduce transportation-related emissions and overall energy savings by reusing items that would otherwise have to be manufactured. Also, a dependence on landfills can be reduced through waste prevention and recycling measures, resulting in the further elimination of greenhouse gas emissions. For more information on the importance of waste management, please visit www.iclei.org/ccp.

Ansan is one of 30 local governments in Korea who are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Korea, please visit www.iclei.org/korea.
