Tree planting effort in Jabalpur

March 21, 2007

Every day since 17 July 2004, trees have been planted in Jabalpur (India) by the KADAM Society in recognition of individual birthdays.

The KADAM Society, with the support of the Navbharat Newspaper and Hamara Jabalpur, has been helping people celebrating their birthday by planting a tree, every day of the year at 10:00 exactly. Gardeners maintain the trees, and take responsibility for the tree’s watering and general maintenance.

On 9 March 2007, the 966th tree was planted at Chanchal Bai College in Jabalpur, and the 1000th tree will be planted at Bhawartal Park in Jabalpur on 12 April 2007.

Trees can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in two ways: (1) trees directly absorb carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere during photosynthesis, and (2) shade from trees can reduce air conditioning and energy use, which reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emissions emitted by power plants. On a carbon saving basis alone, urban trees provide greater benefits that rural trees, because they reduce carbon emission by reducing costing / heating energy consumption. In fact, researchers estimate that an urban tree can save five to ten times more overall carbon than a rural tree (source: Tree Canada Foundation).
