Season of Cycling begins in Christchurch
March 14, 2007
The Season of Cycling in Christchurch (New Zealand) runs from December 2006 to April 2007.
The Season of Cycling hosts a number of bicycle events, including cycling races, competitions, and an opportunity nominate a top ride for the people’s choice awards for the best fun, best adventure, and elite on and off roads in Christchurch.
Another popular event is the Bike Wise Business Battle, a fun competition that encourages more people to cycle. Each organization or department competes to see who can get the highest percentage of staff to ride a bike for at least 2 kilometres or 10 minutes.
When properly supported with bikeways, traffic signals that favour bicycles, and other infrastructure and policies that promote safe, efficient cycling, bicycles can carry a substantial share of the urban transport burden. For more information on bicycling and other alternative modes of transportation, please visit ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection® Campaign at www.iclei.org/ccp.
Christchurch is one of 10 Members in New Zealand of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. For more information on ICLEI and its activities in the Oceania region, please visit www.iclei.org/oceania.
