Nature museums in Montréal benefit biodiversity

March 14, 2007

The city of Montréal (Canada) nature museums are now linked to the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

A memorandum of understanding between the two organizations establishes a formal framework for collaboration and exchange, aimed at developing and providing training programs on strategic, technical and scientific issues for the effective implementation of the Convention.

The nature museums will benefit from this sharing of expertise and the understanding of species conservation, and the museums will provide a venue for raising the profile of the Secretariat and the enormous challenges related to biodiversity loss.

Mayor Tremblay said that the memorandum, “… testifies to how important it is for our city to host such an international organization and to the benefits we can draw from the sharing of information and expertise.”

ICLEI has established the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project to explore the best ways for local governments to engage in effective biodiversity protection, utilization and management. For more information on LAB, please visit www.iclei.org/lab.
