Glasgow’s environmental strategy looks toward 2012

March 07, 2007

The City Council of Glasgow (Scotland) has adopted an Environmental Strategy and Action Plan from 2006 to 2012.

The plan incorporates the wide range of activities related to environmental protection and enhancement that are currently being carried out and introduces a number of new policies intended to help address environmental challenges. An important part of the plan is the inclusion of quantifiable targets.

Elements of the plan include an internal carbon management programme, offsetting the carbon emissions from air travel by council officials, developing more effective flood defences, preparing a strategic surface water management plan, and promoting renewable energy, among others.

The Sustainable Development Group, a multi-disciplinary group that provides guidance to Glasgow City Council and author of the plan, is also responsible for developing corporate policy in areas such as energy and sustainable construction. ICLEI’s Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Campaign promotes a participatory, long-term, strategic planning process that supports local governance by identifying local sustainability priorities and mobilizing local governments and their citizens to implement long-term action plans that address these sustainable priorities. Using the LA21 approach of participatory sustainable development planning, ICLEI aims to assist local authorities to move beyond general sustainable development planning and to apply this approach in tackling areas of priority concern.
