28 February is ‘Go By Bike Day’ in Dunedin
February 28, 2007
Two major events will take place on 28 February in Dunedin (New Zealand) to mark ‘Go By Bike Day’, part of national Bike Wise Week.
The day will start off with the Octagon Commuter Breakfast, where cyclists will be encouraged to bike downtown to receive free café vouchers, take part in competitions, win prizes, and try out the ‘crazy bikes’. Then, a ‘Go By Bike’ Lunch will take place at the Otago University Campus, to encourage students to travel to the campus by bicycle for a free lunch and giveaways while their bicycles receive a free ‘makeover’.
Earlier in the week, Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin led a Mayoral Challenge Race, one of seventeen held across the country.

When properly supported with bikeways, traffic signalsthat favour bicycles, and other infrastructure and policies that promote safe, efficient cycling, bicycles can carry a substantial share of the urban transport burden. Dunedin is one of 10 local governments in New Zealand that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. For more information on ICLEI and its activities in the Oceania Secretariat, please visit www.iclei.org/oceania.
