Residents of Rodney creators of their sustainable development plan
January 31, 2007
The sustainable development plans for several communities in Rodney (New Zealand) were the result of public meetings and focus groups where residents provided council officials with their views and vision for the future.
The sustainable development plans consider local community aspirations and values, in the context of achieving a sustainable environment and economy for future generations. Specifically developed for the communities of Matakana and Pt Wells/Omaha Flats, the plans aim to: - reflect the community’s vision for the future
- set out how much growth is expected and where it can be accommodated;
- guide infrastructure planning for growth and development; and
- provide a framework for sustainable economic and social development.
These plans can be viewed on Sidney Council’s website. Please visit www.rodney.govt.nz/services/Matakana_Omaha_Point_wells/matakana_omaha.htm
ICLEI’s Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Campaign promotes a participatory, long-term, strategic planning process that supports local governance by identifying local sustainability priorities and mobilizing local governments and their citizens to implement long-term action plans that address these sustainable priorities. Using the LA21 approach of participatory sustainable development planning, ICLEI aims to assist local authorities to move beyond general sustainable development planning and to apply this approach in tackling areas of priority concern. For more information, please visit www.iclei.org/la21.
Rodney is one of 10 local governments in New Zealand that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. For more information on ICLEI and its activities in New Zealand and Australia, please visit the Oceania Secretariat at www.iclei.org/oceania.
