Delta protecting its ecosystem

January 24, 2007

Delta (Canada) is working with other levels of government to protect the special attributes of the Burns Bog.

The Burns Bog is a raised ecosystem covering approximately 3,000 hectares of the Fraser River delta. It is globally unique because of its chemistry, form, flora and large size. Managed as an Ecological Conservancy Area, it is being protected for its ecological value, and will not be intended for public use.

A long-term management plan has been established for the Bog that is based on a conservation covenant that is a legally binding document that has been placed on the Bog to protect and manage the area effectively as a natural ecosystem.

Because local government is tasked with service provision and ensuring that social and economic development needs within the carrying capacity of the biological resource base, local government is an important manager of global biodiversity. ICLEI has established the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project to explore the best ways for local governments to engage in effective biodiversity protection, utilization and management. <!----For more information on LAB, please visit www.iclei.org/biodiversity.--->

Delta is one of 19 local governments in Canada that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. To learn more about ICLEI and its activities in Canada, please visit www.iclei.org/canada.
