Gangwon prepared for potential disasters
January 24, 2007
Gangwon Province (Korea) has worked to develop reliable disaster management measures.
Some of these measures include establishing the Institute for Environment and Disaster Prevention, and setting up an ‘Emergency Support Team’ with residents and the construction industry.
Gangwon works with the 5,000 volunteers in voluntary civic safety groups, and a private sector advisory team of 102 members. Together these partners have examined 3,400 facilities to determine their vulnerability to disasters, and then undertaken the necessary repairs.
ICLEI is currently undertaking a project to assess the usefulness and usability of disaster risk management tools for local governments. For more information, please contact resilient.communities@iclei.org.
Gangwon is one of 30 local governments in Korea that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. To learn more about ICLEI and its activities in Korea, please visit www.iclei.org/korea.
