Trees planted in São Paulo to offset GHG emissions
January 18, 2007
Trees will be planted in the city of São Paulo (Brazil) to offset the greenhouse gas emissions produced in the production of a new Brazilian television program called “Cidades e Soluções” (Cities and Solutions).
This is the first time that a television program has offset the emissions produced in the production of its program. The calculation of emissions includes the dislocation of production staff (automobiles, buses, air travel, etc.), the consumption of electricity in the taping, editing and transmission of the show, as well as the energy consumption of its viewers.
The agreement, through “Iniciativa Verde”, will be to plant and maintain new trees on the margins of the River Ipiranga for a period of five years. The forest around the river currently does not receive any water due to the exhaustion of the aquasphere. These trees will be a native species from the Atlantic Rain Forest in the botanical garden located in São Paulo.
It is estimated that approximately 680 trees will be planted through this agreement.
Tree planting is a climate change strategy that not only improves local air quality, but also enhances local biodiversity. For more information on ICLEI’s initiatives on climate protection and biodiversity, please explore our website further.
