Tuzla protecting Europe’s oldest salt lake
January 17, 2007
Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) is located on a salt bed, and the city’s present name means ‘place of salt’ in Turkish.
There is a salt lake located in the city’s central park; it is the only salt lake in a central park in all of Europe, as well as being the oldest.
The Lake not only plays an integral role in the city’s biodiversity, but serves as a draw to both citizens and visitors in the city, attracting over 100,000 visitors a year.
Coincidentally, there is also a Tuzla Lake in Turkey, which is a natural conservation area protected for its high biodiversity value.
Local Action for Biodiversity is an initiative currently being explored with interested ICLEI Members to better understand urban biodiversity issues and the implementation of actions. For more information, please visit www.iclei.org.
Tuzla is one of 159 local governments in Europe that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. To learn more about ICLEI and its activities in the Europe Region, please visit www.iclei.org/europe.
