Abuja benefits from an elaborate transportation system
January 04, 2007
The Master Plan developed for Abuja (Nigeria) and the Territory include an elaborate transportation system that incorporates government-provided services and private sector options.
The transportation system is a network of peripheral and transverse expressways, transit ways, aerials, collectors and local streets. The combination of these systems creates a comprehensive highway grid system servicing the major development sectors, and also defining their growth limits.
The centre of the city consists of bus stations, metro and railway stations with private and taxi parks. The city also introduced London taxis and luxury buses in an effort to make Abuja an international conference centre for Africa.
Abuja is one of 38 local governments in Africa that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. For more information on ICLEI and its programs in Africa, please visit www.iclei.org/africa.
