Innovative Recycling Centre Has Multiple Benefits

May 12, 2009

Wodonga Council’s (Victoria, Australia) Sort and Save Recycling Centre brings together community members, workers and shop owners to keep waste away from landfills. The centre dismantles and sells material to the public that may not otherwise be able to go to a designated recycling area. therefore reducing waste in landfills. It also provides a workplace for the un-employed, has affordable second-hand goods and educates the community on efficient waste management.

Chief Executive Officer of Sustainability Victoria, Anita Roper, commended the organisation and its partners on the initiative. "This project reflects the values we have at Sustainability Victoria, which is to support programs that foster sustainable resource use and have economic and social benefits for the community. Projects like these not only have a positive outcome for our environment but they also build and improve opportunities in the local community by creating local employment," she said.
