Climate Protection on Track in Freiburg
May 12, 2009
In January 2009, ICLEI Member city and host of the European Secretariat, Freiburg (Germany), began 2009 with a switch to environmentally friendly public transport. Freiburg’s VAG public transport company has introduced Regiostrom (locally produced 100 percent renewable energy) from regional utility company, Badenova.
By 2030, Freiburg hopes to reduce CO2 emissions by 40 percent in comparison to 1992 levels. The switch also sends a message that cities and enterprises, along with private consumers, can use energy from climate-friendly sources.
