ICLEI Africa and Local African Governments Host Sustainablity Event
May 13, 2009
ICLEI Africa and The United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA) delivered a two-day learning platform on Climate Change and Sustainable Energy at the Sunbird Lilongwe Hotel, in Lilongwe, Republic of Malawi, from 31 March - 1 April 2009. The event, which represented 13 African countries, was attended by political leaders, representatives from national associations of local governments, mayors and councillors.
The event resulted in the establishment of an African Local Government sub-committee on Climate Change and Sustainable Energy, which was endorsed by the Executive Committee of the UCLGA. The sub-committee will represent local governments engaged in climate change, energy and the environment regionally, continentally and internationally. It will be made up of a technical representative from ICLEI Africa, mayors, councillors and officials from local governments throughout the continent.
ICLEI Africa and UCLGA have been working together on sustainable development projects since 2005 and are in the process of adopting a joint Energy and Climate Change Work Programme complementing several other related initiatives.
