Bikes, a Green New Deal for Jeju (Korea)

Jeju Special Self-governing Province is in the process a adopting eco-friendly plans such as the establishment of ‘Bicycle Lane Construction alongside Jeju Coast’, as part of a bicycle lane construction project, one of the Green New Deal Projects. The provincial government announced that the Korean government invested 1.24 trillion won (95 millon USD) in the project to build bike lanes of 3114km and the province would invest 101.2 billon won from 2009 to 2015, building a total of 251km of bike lanes. The Jeju government will fund the construction of 21km of bicycle lanes as a pilot plan and is in consultation with the central government about subsidizing 8.4 billion won.
New Public Bicycles
In addition, the provincial government will establish an automated system to manage public bicycles making available broadly bicycles that are linked to innovative information technology system. The Jeju government will invest 300 million won from this March to October, 2009 to put 150 bicycles in 10 spots close to public transportation hotspots and tourist attractions. At the same time, it will propel the implementation of unmanned service system and buy 5,000 bicycles for public use by 2013.
To increase the portion of bicycles in public transportation to 5% by 2013, the government will implement various policies including installing bicycle carriers on buses, building bicycle parking lots and setting safety signs. “The bicycle is a new paradigm to solve climate changes, environmental pollutions and traffic congestions. Advanced countries in Europe have already implemented policies to boost bicycle ride as a major issue. In line with this, Jeju is seeking for various policies to increase bicycle use exploiting beautiful natural environment,” said an official in the Jeju provincial government.
