Workshop on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Thane (India)

ICLEI - South Asia, along with Thane Municipal Corporation, organised an International Workshop on Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Measures for Indian Local Governments. The workshop was supported by the British High Commission under the City Level Carbon Emissions Reduction project. The workshop was inaugurated by Shri. Suni Tatkare, Hon’ble Minister of Energy, Maharashtra; Smt Smita Indulkar, Hon’ble Mayor Thane, Shri. Nankumar Jantre, Hon’ble Commissioner of Thane; Mr Mahesh Zagarde, Director General MEDA; Ms. Hansa Patel, Chairperson ICLEI - South Asia; & Mr. Emani Kumar, Executive Director, ICLEI - South Asia. The programme was graced by Ms. Arati Mehra, Hon’ble Mayor of Delhi and Mr. Spencer Mahony, First Secretary Trade & Investment, British Deputy High Commission. The workshop was attended by over 150 delegates that included Hon’ble City Mayors & Commissioners and other senior government officials, energy experts, institutions, consultants, NGOs and representatives from various other sectors. The objective of this workshop was to raise the awareness of the issue of greenhouse gases and carbon emissions that have played a significant role in increasing the problem of Global Warming/Climate Change. The International Workshop received an overwhelming response and opened avenues for further discussions on the issue in the local context.
