Capacity Training in Belo Horizonte, Brazil: "An Introduction to inventories on greenhouse gas emissions"

November 27, 2008

The first of a series of capacity trainings on inventories, “An Introduction to inventories on greenhouse gas emissions” took place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, on 11 November 2008. Its main objective was to enable participants to use of this tool and to open a discussion as to why use it.

This meeting was attended by ICLEI’s experts on inventories of greenhouse gas emissions, and other relevant players who shared concrete experiences in carrying out inventories in Brazil.

This training demonstrated the importance of conducting inventories in the municipalities, sought to clarify the issue of climate change and the role of Brazil and its municipalities within this issue, inform on the importance of having reliable data, and measure the role of civil construction and energy.

The event was held within the realm of the project "Promoting Sustainable Building Blocks Policies in South America," which includes the cities of Buenos Aires (Argentina), Montevideo (Uruguay) and Belo Horizonte (Brazil) among the pilot governments, in addition to other partners such as the municipalities of Porto Alegre and São Paulo.

This project aims to create a support network to help municipalities develop action plans and policies for the civil construction sector, which stimulates both passive and active solutions regarding the energy efficiency of buildings in order to reduce their carbon footprints, to bring economy to public administration, and to collaborate in global efforts towards climate protection.
