ICLEI Africa’s attendance at the 2008 World Water Week
September 20, 2008
The 2008 World Water Week took place in Stockholm, Sweden from 17 – 23 August 2008. 2400 participants from over 130 countries attended the plenary sessions, workshops, seminars and side events. Mr Rapule Pule, the Water Programme Manager of the Water Office, represented the ICLEI Africa Secretariat (ICLEI-AS).
Aim of the visit
The aim of ICLEI’s attendance was primarily to (i) gather information and establish synergies with initiatives similar to future planned programs of ICLEI-AS, (ii) share lessons learned from the current water and sanitation programs of ICLEI-AS, (iii) establish links and networks with strategic participants and discuss opportunities on potential funding of the ICLEI-AS Water and Sanitation Programme.
About the World Water Week
The purpose and scope of the 2008 World Water Week in Stockholm was to scrutinise progress and prospects in the efforts to build a clean and healthy world. Special attention was devoted this year to the sanitation challenge and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal target on sanitation, where the world continues to fall behind.
Topics: Sanitation, Water & Climate Change
Various sessions were held to provide information and discussions on best practices in sanitation, water and climate change. The last two days of the event were dedicated to issues pertaining to water and climate change including strategies, ways and means by which regions, nations and local communities can use to adapt to negative impacts caused by climate change such as extreme floods and droughts.
