The IV Latin American Congress of Local Governments was held in Mexico City, in Mexico.

Mexico City signs the World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement

ICLEI Mexico co-organized a session on sustainability and climate change at the IV Latin American Congress of Local Governments where 400 Local government’s representatives met from 27 to 29 August 2008.

The session was planned together with Mexico City, the Mayors of Guadalajara and Ocuilán in Mexico and San Carlos in Argentina.

Latin American metropolises join local action on climate change

49 Local Governments of Latin America signed the World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement (including some prior to the event).

ICLEI and its partners are proud that the Mayor of Mexico City, the Mayor of Quito (Co president of UCLG and ICLEI Excom member), the Mayor of San Jose (Costa Rica) and Mayors who are part of his Executive Board of National Associations of Municipalities signed it.

There were also signatories from Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Colombia, Chile & Equator.

Final congress statement supports the Agreement

In addition, at the Congress the local governments of Latin America wrote the Mexico City Statement of the FLACMA Congress which include the following passage:

"Local Governments of Latin America support and exhort the local authorities of Latin America and Caribbean to sign the World Mayors And Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement, promoted by ICLEI, UCLG, C40 and WMCCC, and consequently assume the commitments of leadership and action that this document includes, in the order that we must not only join it, but influence and procure the correct fulfilling."

Seeing the results of the congress, Mr. Edgar Villaseñor Franco, director of ICLEI Mexico said:"We are proud to see new signatories and renewed commitments to ICLEI in Latin America".
