ICLEI South Asia in Partnership with WWF India

September 15, 2008

ICLEI South Asia Secretariat and WWF India, one of the largest conservation organizations in the country, signed a partnership agreement to jointly explore and undertake projects in the areas of urbanization and sustainability as part of an objective to transition towards a low carbon economy.

Supporting Sustainable Urban Growth

The aim is to develop ideas and actions for sustainable urban growth based on relevant dimensions of environmental sustainability and governance in cities.  Mr. Emani Kumar, Executive Director, ICLEI SA and Mr. Ravi Singh, Secretary General and CEO, WWF India, signed the memorandum of understanding in New Delhi on September 11, 2008.

ICLEI and WWF will collaborate on joint projects to promote and advocate measures for co-management of water and energy in urban areas; promote sustainable use of natural resources and consumption practices in urban areas, promote and pilot innovative approaches in water resource management, energy use and municipal waste; and develop innovative initiatives and campaigns such as rating/footprint disclosure of urban local bodies that promote sustainable development and capture the attention of decision makers, investors and key stakeholders.

Work will also be done on biodiversity conservation and natural resource initiatives, and management systems such as ecoBudget will be promoted in the context of rapid urbanization.

WWF
