Workshops on Energy Efficient Built Environments in India
August 11, 2008
The construction industry in India is one of the rapidly growing sectors. With more buildings the electricity demand is expected to grow manifold in the coming years. In this context, energy conservation in buildings through sustainable construction, operation and maintenance, has become a new concern.
ICLEI South Asia with the support from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Bureau of Energy Efficiency has conducted a series of four regional workshops on ‘Energy Efficient Buildings’. The overall purpose of these workshops is to promote energy efficient building design in the Indian construction sector. They targeted local architects, builders, and developers, development authorities, city municipal corporations, environment consultants, and students of architecture.
The series of Regional Workshops on Energy Efficient Buildings were held in four cities of India – Nagpur in the Western Region on 14 March 2008, Bhubaneshwar in the Eastern Region on 1 April 2008, Noida in the Northern Region on 25 April 2008 and Chennai in the Southern Region on 23 May 2008. Shri V Subramanian, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India was present in two of the workshops in Bhubaneshwar and Chennai and inaugurated them.
Many eminent speakers from all over India gave presentations in these workshops and covered aspects related to the principles of energy efficient buildings design, institutional and regulatory framework for energy efficient buildings and energy conservation in building services. “Energy efficient building design is common sense and sensitive design and planning of buildings can reduce their energy consumption tremendously,” said Professor Ashok Lall, an expert on climate responsive buildings design, who gave a presentation in each of these workshops.
