Urban Climate Project initiated with Asia Pacific Partnership
July 30, 2008
A majority of core investments by cities today give less priority to include climate measures. These investments can become missed opportunities. ICLEI-South Asia (SA) in association with ICLEI USA and the National Institute for Urban Affairs (India) has recently initiated the Urban Climate Project targeting these opportunities. The Urban Climate Project will be implemented in two selected cities by ICLEI South Asia and is funded by a grant from the Asia Pacific Partnership program.
Fifteen cities under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) have been shortlisted in consultation with the Ministry of Urban Development (Government of India) on the basis of predefined criteria. ICLEI SA has sought statement of interest from all fifteen short listed cities (Municipal Corporations) that are implementing the JNNURM projects to participate in the above mentioned project.
The three-year Asia-Pacific Partnership project will help two cities to implement fifteen clean development measures through ten interventions including technical and implementation support. Through the Urban Climate Project ICLEI SA with support from NIUA aims to assist cities to implement infrastructure projects through technical and to some extent financial support, by including cleaner and efficient technologies and also model greenhouse gases deflections to showcase their benefit.
