Entebbe host of the Nile Basin Initiative

January 02, 2008

Entebbe (Uganda) is the host of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), a partnership of Nile Basin States.

The NBI’s shared vision program includes the efficient use of water for agriculture, water resources planning and management, and Nile trans-boundary environmental action.

Water resources planning and management – this program was established to formulate and implement effective national policies and strategies for integrated water resource management in Nile Basic countries and address the trans-boundary dimension within the national water policy process.

Nile trans-boundary environmental action – this program, the largest of the Nile Basin Initiative, aims to create the enabling environment for the Nile riparian’s to realize their vision to achieve sustainable socio-economic development through the equitable utilization of, and benefit from, the common Nile Basin water resources.  It provides a strategic framework for environmentally sustainable development of the Nile River Basin.

The NBI is a partnership initiated and led by the riparian states of the Nile River which seeks to develop the river in a cooperative manner, share substantial socio-economic benefits, and promote regional peace and security.  Countries that are part of the NBI are Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
