Tampere Energy Agency plays important role

January 29, 2008

The Energy Agency established in Tampere  (Finland) plays an important role in the achievement of energy savings.

The Energy Agency was set up in 1999 to facilitate and diversify the work to save energy.  Up until then, while Tampere had successfully been achieving energy savings, the city wanted to integrate energy savings into all operations and activities.

The Agency coordinates the drawing up of a new energy efficiency plan, and of the yearly energy savings reports.  The Agency represents Tampere in national and international energy savings networks, and cooperates closely with energy experts.

The Agency introduces new ideas and operational models into the city’s work to save energy.  It also plays an important role in disseminating information on energy saving to the inhabitants and companies in Tampere.  It runs an energy hotline for households, has a showroom on responsible daily choices, and lends out electricity meters.

Additionally, the Agency takes part in the organization of the yearly energy savings week, arranges training, and coordinates externally funded energy saving and climate projects.

Energy efficiency programs offer one of the best ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  A large share of fossil fuel use is dedicated to providing the electricity that powers almost all aspects of daily lives. Globally, 75 percent of all energy is consumed in cities.  For strategies to reduce energy use at the local government, community and industrial level, please visit www.iclei.org/ccp.

Tampere is one of 16 local governments in  Finland that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Europe, please go to www.iclei.org/europe.
