Roseville Skating Center

Roseville engaged in climate protection

December 19, 2007

Concern for the environment in Roseville (MN, U.S.A.) has resulted in the city joining ICLEI, and becoming a signatory to the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.

“I think we’ve got the moral obligation to be leaders on this,” said Council Member Amy Ihlan.  “No matter how much individuals want to do something to mitigate global warming, ultimately it’s up to city leaders to come up with a plan.”

The plan, she said, it to determine emission levels and then figure out ways to lower them.  That likely would mean getting people to drive less by offering more transportation alternatives.

City staff members are also researching geothermal energy options.  It started as a possibility for the Roseville Skating Center and has since expanded to an option for heating/cooling other buildings, including their City Hall.

More and more cities are facing the need to mitigate climate change while already adapting to the changes brought about by climate change.  ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection® (CCP) Campaign is an innovative international campaign that helps local government and their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on the environment.   And now, the CCP Campaign is launching the Adaptation Initiative, building capacity for climate change impacts at the local level.  For more information, please visit www.iclei.org/ccp.

Roseville is one of 265 local governments in the U.S.A. that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in the U.S.A., please visit www.iclei.org/usa.
