Sustainable tourism in Pamplemousses and Riviere du Rempart
October 17, 2007
Tourism being a major growth sector in the Pamplemousses and Riviere-du-Rempart District (Mauritius), recent effort has gone into ensuring that tourism as an industry is sustainable.
Mauritius is a tropical island, with many resorts and hotels on its waterfront. In Pamplemousses and Riviere-du-Rempart, the natural beauty of the beaches, mountain ranges and landscapes attract millions to explore the unspoilt natural beauty. City officials are therefore working with national authorities to protect these natural frontiers.
Sustainable development, as defined by the Brundtland Report, is “… development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” ICLEI’s mission is to build sustainable communities. Please visit pages on our website - www.iclei.org - for more information.
Pamplemousses and Riviere-du-Rempart is one of 32 local governments in Africa that are currently Members of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability. For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Africa, please visit www.iclei.org/africa.
