Lillehammer host of conference on sustainability

Just last week, Lillehammer (Norway) hosted a conference on sustainability in the cement and concrete industry.

The purpose of the conference was to focus on the cement and concrete industries’ contributions to the fundamental issues related to sustainable development - energy, emissions and resources.  The emphasis was to be on the possibilities to minimize and help solve environmental problems by environmentally friendly and advanced production and use of cementious materials.

The technical program of the conference included:

  • reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (including binding of CO2 in concrete);
  • reductions in the consumption of natural resources and energy;
  • health issues related to the production and use of cement and concrete;
  • new possibilities for the cement and concrete industry related to increased attention to a more sustainable society;
  • energy storage - use of concrete for enhanced energy efficiency of buildings;
  • waste handling; and
  • recycling and re-use of concrete and binder materials including industrial by-products.
