Shenyang a model city for environmental protection in China
August 28, 2007
Shenyang (China) has implemented policies and put measures in place to create a ‘quiet, living environment, a comfortable residing environment, and a clean city and surrounding environment’.
Some of its initiatives include the following: - Overall standard discharge rates for industrial enterprises, being the most advanced in the treatment of domestic waste.
- Development of a 10 kilometre-long green ecological corridor along both banks of the Hunhe River, to create a waterfront city.
- Improvements to boilers, stricter emissions standards, and increased green space that have resulted in 317 calendar days of excellent air quality.
- Per capita green space is 9.8 square metres; from 2000 to 2005 the number of trees planted totalled 19 million.
Shenyang is one of 56 local governments in East Asia that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.
