Regina recognizing watershed stewardship

July 11, 2007

The city of Regina (Canada) is sponsoring its first annual Watershed Stewardship Award.

The award recognizes an individual or group for efforts taken to protect source waters of Wascana Marsh and Wascana Lake to enhance water quality upstream of Regina.  The focus of watershed and aquifer planning is protecting source water – lakes, reservoirs, streams, rivers, and groundwater - by preventing pollution and ensuring sound management of activities that could threaten water quality and quantity.

The city is funding the $1,000 CDN (US?) prize, with the first recipient to be announced in March-June 2008.  The award is being sponsored by the city in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority.

To be eligible for the Award, the project must:

  • be located in the Wascana Creek Watershed, upstream of the eastern city limit;
  • directly benefit the area up to and including Wascana Lake;
  • set an example or take a leadership role; and
  • be innovative and visionary.

ICLEI has an international freshwater Water Campaign that aims to build the capacity of local governments to reduce water consumption and improve local water quality. For more information on ICLEI’s Water Campaign, please visit www.iclei.org/water.

Regina is one of 17 local governments in Canada that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Canada, please visit www.iclei.org/canada.
