Water and sanitation services improved in Kampala

June 26, 2007

Urban poor communities in Kampala (Uganda) are receiving a safe water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the form of toilet facilities.

Under the Kampala Urban Sanitation Project (KUSP), over 200 toilets, 350 water points and 35 rain water collection tanks have been set up in 35 selected parishes. The project is also working to protect up to 85 natural springs in the City, in order to improve the quality of water accessible to the slum communities.

“What we are looking to achieve is a drastic improvement in living standards through improved access to proper sanitary facilities.  This ultimately should also help us to reduce the incidence of water and sanitation-related diseases like cholera and diarrhoea,” said Mr. John Ssebaana Kizito, who was Mayor of Kampala when the project started.

The project was implemented and financed by the Kampala City Council with additional support from the French Development Agency (AFD), and the Ugandan Central Government.

ICLEI has an international Water Campaign that aims to build the capacity of local governments to reduce water consumption and improve local water quality. For more information on ICLEI’s Water Campaign, please visit www.iclei.org/water.

Kampala is one of 37 local governments in Africa that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Africa, please visit www.iclei.org/africa.
